Five songs for understanding Americans

Last week I saw this brilliant post by Patricia of TravelGoGirl (a site that has quickly skyrocketed to the top of my daily must-reads), "5 Songs to Understand Brazilians." I lost myself in the gorgeous music Patricia shared, and thought about how lovely the idea was - travel bloggers helping people understand their cultures through, well, culture. So here's my version, for understanding Americans (or for the very specific among us, "USians").

Warning: the longer I spent working on this list, the more amazing American music I found.  And even though I've always been a music lover,* writing this post made me remember just how much there is to love.

After taking a listen, I'd love to know - what songs would you recommend to folks who want to learn more about where you're from?

1. Optimism

Here Comes the Sun - Nina Simone

Also: Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson

2. Pioneer spirit

I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got - Bettye LaVette

Also: City on a Hill, Braddigan

3. Multiculturalism

One Nation Under a Groove - Parliament

Also: O Happy Day - Sister Act 2 (...you read that right. It's a damn good version of this song.)

4. Open Countryside

Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver

Also: Down to the River to Pray - Alison Krauss

5. Ambition

Hollywood - Rick James

Also: Material Girl - Madonna

*Fun fact: I used to study music, and nearly made it my degree focus!
