Guest post: Best Zipline Adventures

Hi everyone!  Today's post comes from the epically adventurous Noella, a writer from one of my favorite places in the world - Maine!  Here are her picks for awesome zipline adventures around the world (personally, though I love the idea, the last time I got on a zipline I just spun wildly out of control.  I was eight).

Best Zipline Adventures

My first zipline ride was at gymnastics camp when I was twelve. About 45 feet high and 600 feet long, I screamed like a little girl (I suppose I was one), but loved every second of it. Since then, I’ve sought out ziplines wherever I travel. Nothing spices up a trip abroad like a death defying stunt! The scenery only gets more beautiful as your adrenaline gets pumping. A fairly new trend around the world, ziplines are reaching higher, stretching longer and inducing even greater squeals of delight from South Africa to Alaska!

The first zipline operation in the USA, Skyline has been delighting adventure seekers since 2002. The Ka’anapali zipline course on the island of Maui is an awe-inspiring way to experience the real landscape of Hawaii. With an eco-educational focus, your tour will include an epic 1000 foot high look out over Mount Kahalawai’s lush valleys, ziplines over misty jungle waterfalls and views of 4 Hawaiian Islands including Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe.

In the majestic shadow of Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most touted canopy adventures begins. Through the buzzing jungle of the foothills, you’ll soar almost 2500 feet on a single zipline, over 650 feet above the rainforest floor! This company has recently started eerie night tours by the light of the full moon, where you can experience luminescent volcanic eruptions and nocturnal wildlife!

The jewel of Britain’s adventure culture, this zipline experience has been operating in Aberfoyle, Scotland since 2002. The UK’s longest, the ride through Queen Elizabeth Forest Park is almost 1400 feet long. You’ll skim above the tree tops at more than 150 feet in the air as you soar over picturesque rock outcrops and even a 90 foot waterfall! This speedy ride, in combination with many hair-raising, tree top-high bridge crossings, makes this a must for any thrill-seeker.

Hoonah, Alaska boasts the tallest and longest zipline in the US. At speeds over 60 mph, you’ll zoom down over Port Frederick for almost 6000 feet. Views of the ocean, the rugged mountain backdrop and the village below will whiz by as you experience more than 1300 feet of vertical drop. As if the speed and staggering height aren’t enough to get your knees shaking, you’ll be soaring 300 feet above the tree tops below! Since 2006 this record breaking zipline has been wowing Alaska’s more daring visitors!

The highest, longest and fastest zipline in the world, this Sun City, South Africa outfit is sought after by adrenaline junkies the world over. You’ll soar from a mountain top over 900 feet above the ground at speeds up to 100 mph! What’s so unique about this ride is that you’re set up in a “Superman” harness on your stomach—the face first position makes it even more thrilling! You can even take this plunge tandem, which is unusual for a zipline as well. For the best of the best, don’t miss Zip 2000.
